42% of enterprises had 2023 AI budgets that met or exceeded $1 million, 23% had budgets meeting or exceeding $2 million, and 9% had budgets reaching or surpassing $5 million.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has rapidly emerged as a significant investment for most enterprises. In a new report, Omdia found that substantial budgets were allocated to AI in 2023, and AI budgets are set to increase in 2024.

Mark Beccue, Principal Analyst at Omdia, stated: "42% of the enterprises we surveyed had 2023 AI budgets that met or exceeded $1 million, 23% had budgets meeting or exceeding $2 million, and 9% had budgets reaching or surpassing $5 million. The spending trend is consistent regardless of company revenue, region, or vertical. There are logical differences—smaller-revenue enterprises spend less than larger-revenue ones, while verticals with more mature AI use cases spend more than others."

Amid the surging interest in generative AI, Omdia surveyed 369 enterprises in February 2023. The 2023 budgets were likely finalized prior to the generative AI movement.

The growing AI spending carries significant implications:

  1. AI encroaches on other priorities. AI budgets may encroach on funds previously earmarked for other IT and operational initiatives.
  2. The accelerated learning curve in the AI lifecycle will test leadership patience. Organizations will face increasing pressure to quickly build capabilities and demonstrate outcomes.
  3. Then there is the pressure on organizational culture. Increasing AI budgets typically means leadership expects substantial results within a specified timeframe. AI initiatives thrive in organizations with robust innovation processes—these organizations tend to break down organizational silos to address better initiative themes. Organizations with insular cultures will struggle to deliver results.
  4. The urgency for KPI measurement will intensify. With formal AI budgets in place, organizations must define and report specific AI KPIs.
  5. AI-ready organizations will accelerate their development. Significant AI budgets will reflect the importance of aligning the entire organization. Investments will be made to establish more formal organizational structures to manage the people and processes supporting actionable AI.

It is clear that AI will reshape the way organizations operate, and the allocation of funds for AI adoption will be one of the decisive factors for organizational success.
